Artist Residence, Cornwall
Location
A manor house set on a cobbled lane Artist Residence Penzance is just a stones throw away from the sea. Keen swimmers can also make the most of Art Deco inspired Jubilee Pool. Reminiscent of a David Hockney painting it is worth a visit even if you don’t swim and there is a charming community café too. The pool is fresh salt water and by spring 2019 will be heated thanks to new geothermal technology.
Chapel street is also home to some fantastic antique, vintage and homeware stores. Just up the road from the hotel is No. 56 – a beautiful homeware and gift store that stocks locally made ceramics, bathroom products, clothing and stationery. Right next door to it a rather fun record/junk store where you will find everything to Stan Getz vinyl to vintage NME magazines.
St Ives is also just a twenty five minute drive and well worth a visit. be sure to head to Tate st Ives if you do.
The rooms
Each one of the twenty-two rooms is unique and designed by a different artist. I recommend booking a room with a bath tub if you can. The Artist Residence do baths very well and there is little better than soaking in a large tub with a cup of tea. Each room is equipped with its own nespresso style coffee machine, very good tea and a well stocked basket of Cornish snacks. Drinks are complimentary and there is a small charge for anything from the snack basket. I can personally vouch for the Cornish fudge.
Our room had the look and feel of a log cabin with wood planked walls and Victorian trunks as bedside tables. The Roberts radio (that was rather atmospherically playing Classic FM as we first entered our room) is a lovely addition. Rarely do we give ourselves the treat of just sitting down and listening to the radio. A most welcome luxury.
Downstairs the feel is cosy meets eccentric. Think log fires and velvet armchairs, eclectic art and a quirky touches.
Food and Drink
Breakfast is included in your stay and is very good. Perfect eggs, very good coffee and home made granola with fruit compote. The Cornish Barn is also open for lunch and dinner (for non staying guests too). The menu echoes the spirit of the hotel serving wholesome dishes with a twist that celebrate local produce. Don’t miss the smoked salmon or the ribs – both smoked in the onsite smoke house.
If you fancy stepping outside the hotel and stretching your legs before supper The Tolcarne inn is also a lovely choice – serving local fish and meat with a refined yet unfussy curated menu.
